○　学校訪問で出会った心温まる話

　檜山教育局に勤務するＡＬＴのトーマス・グリーナウェイさんは、檜山管内の高校、小学校、中学校を訪問し、外国語指導での補助とともに母国イギリスの文化を伝えています。そんなトーマスさんが、学校訪問で出会った心温まる話を紹介してくれました。

　　　　Last May my parents came to visit me in Japan and they stayed with me in Esashi and Okushiri for a few days. During that time I took them to Esashi High School to meet some of the teachers and 　　students that I made friends with. I showed my parents some of the afterschool activities that Esashi　　provides.

My parents were very curious about Japanese Archery. When we went to the archery dojo 　the students were very kind and tried to explain archery to my parents in English. They struggled, but 　  they tried very hard. “You have the bow like this… the glove like this…” They showed them the 　　　　　different clothes that they had to wear and the rules of Japanese archery, from the starting ceremony　 to the release of the arrow. Some of the students were very nervous practicing archery in front of my 　parents and my parents thought it might be better to leave them to practice alone. However the　　　    students told my parents that it was good for them to be there because they had to learn how to 　　　  　　perform under pressure. It was good preparation for when they have to take part in competitions. One student, whenever he missed the target, would turn around to my parents and say “the next one, the  next one…” He had a very positive attitude. Speaking English seemed to be infectious whilst my 　　　　　parents were there. The students started reporting their scores using English numbers and saying 　　“excuse me” to each other and trying to ask each other to do things in English.

When I talk to my parents now they like to talk about the archery club and how friendly everyone there was to them. 

（訳）今年５月、イギリスから私の両親が来日して、今住んでいる江差町や学校訪問で訪れる奥尻町で数日間過ごしました。ある日、私は、学校訪問で友達となった先生方や生徒がいる江差高校に両親を連れて行き、放課後の部活動を見せました。

　両親は、特に弓道に関心を持ちました。私たちが弓道場に入ると、生徒たちはとても親切で英語で弓道を説明してくれました。「弓はこうもって、手袋はこうして」と言いながら、様々な弓道着の説明や、矢を射るまでの礼儀作法などを教えてくれました。

　両親は、「人が見ている前で練習するのはとても緊張するものなので、部活のじゃまをしないように帰った方がいいのではないか」とも思ったようですが、ある生徒が「緊張した方が良いです。自分たちは、緊張した中でプレーするやり方を学ぶ必要があります。大会では、とても緊張するので良い練習になります。」と言ってくれました。

　　その生徒は、練習中、矢が的からはずれても、両親の方を振り向き「the next one, the next one（次、次）」と言い、どんどん練習を続けます。両親が弓道場にいる間、その場は、英語で話すことが自然になっていきました。他の部員たちも自分の点数を英語で伝え合い、様々なことを、英語で話しました。

　現在、両親はイギリスに戻りましたが、私が電話するたびに、弓道部のことや、あの時、部員のみんながどれほど親切であったかを話したがります。
