About Us

HOURS: 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (last entry is at 4:30 a.m.)
CLOSED:*Every Monday (if Monday is a national holiday: Tuesday) 
*New Year's holiday (December 29 -January 3)
*We will be closed for certain periods while changing exhibitions. Please check our website for details.

Hakodate Museum of Art, Hokkaido
Hakodate Museum of Art opened in September 1986 as an art cultural center for Hakodate and the southern Hokkaido area. Themed on "the artworks of the southern Hokkaido area", "oriental art and calligraphy", and "contemporary art of letters and symbols", the museum collects and preserves excellent artworks from the modern age. At the same time, the museum holds featured exhibitions and lectures covering various periods and fields, and also promotes a wide range of educational activities.

Exhibitions
Permanent Exhibitions: Museum Collection Room and Otei Memorial Room
The Museum Collection Room has artworks from southern Hokkaido and other contemporary arts.
The Otei Memorial Room has calligrapy works of KANEKO Otei (1906 -2001) who was born in Matsumae-cho, near Hakodate, and was a leader in modern Japanese calligraphy. The content of the exhibition is charged three times a year and the artworks are introduced from a variety of perspectives.

Special Exhibitions: Exhibitions of artworks and calligrapgy closely related to southern Hokkaido, exhibitions in various fields from local and international artists, and touring exhibitions in collaboration with other museums in Hokkaido are held.

TOUCH THE ART! Corner
You can touch and appreciate four sculptures with your hands in the "TOUCH THE ART" corner.
Feel the art in a different and interesting way! Before touching them, please clean your hands with the provided wet wipes and remove your rings and / or watches.

Free Japanese Calligraphy Experience Corner (9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.)  click here2
We have a calligraphy experience corner for visitors. The receptionist will give you a traditional paper postcard. There are some examples of Japanese characters at the corner, so just take a calligraphy brush pen and try it.

Café and Museum Shop
Our café and museum shop are run by a local volunteer group "Ichii-no-kai". Take a break and enjoy some fresh coffee or
tea while talking with locals.

For everybody's comfort and the preservation of the artworks, please observe these rules:
● Do not touch exhibits.  
● Be considerate of others when you talk.
● Put your phone on silent mode.
● Do not eat or drink (including gum, candy, etc.) in the exhibition rooms.
● Put your large luggage in a locker.
● No pets are allowed. Service animals are welcome.
● Do not use writing tools other than pencils in the exhibition rooms.
● Please pay special attention to your children.
● Do not photograph or video exhibitts in the special exhibition room.
*Photography is allowed in the Permanent Exhibition room and Otei Memorial Room. Please read and observe the rules  
  below.

Photography in the Permanent Collection Room and the Otei Memorial Room
In order to prevent accidents, preserve the art works, and allow all guests to have an enjoyable experience, please keep the following in mind with regard to photography in the gallaries:
1. Plese note the following:
● No flashes, tripods, monopods or long objects (such as selfie sticks)
● No close-up photography that may damage the art works
● No walking (moving) while filming
● No filming / photography which includes other guests
● No filming / photography in one location for an extended time, or interfering with other guests' viewing of the art   
    works.
2. If it is possible to turn off the "shutter" sound, or other sounds, please do so.
3. Staff members may ask you to refrain from filming / photographing to preserve the art works or to maintain a pleasant
    viewing environment.
4. All commercial photography or photography for business purposes is forbidden.
5. Note that copyright may apply for any use of photographs (such as producing multiple copies, or publishing on the
    internet) besides private enjoyment.
6. These conditons may vary depending on the exhibiton.
